SplashID is a Secure Password Manager app created by SplashData, Inc. The app allows to you store any type of private data that you can think of, like online passwords, credit card information and other personal information that you want password protected.

First, let me explain the background for why this is such an important application. The original Palm Desktop took care of protecting your passwords because you could force a password entry to view individual items like your contacts and memos, etc. If you sync with Outlook, that wonderful password protection functionality was lost because Outlook’s security indicator is just a check box but doesn’t force a password entry for viewing. SplashID requires you to enter a password to open the application so now you have a great repository for all of personal information.

To search for an entry, just start typing. The search is based on the information that is in Field 1. The past versions allowed you select which columns you wanted to view so you would have a better idea of which item you’re selecting. Often times, Field 1 has the same name and Field 2 is the secondary identifier. For example, I have multiple accounts with the same bank, Field 1 may be the Bank name; then Field 2 is the account type (savings, business, personal checking). As is, you have to guess which entry is the right one. Fortunately, you can easily filter by the Type and Category to narrow your search by just tapping the corresponding button. I’m just saying, at least make the functionality the same as previous versions or you’re forcing your users to waste time to change how they entered data based on your original design. It seems that many of the Pre apps are missing the same level of Preferences features that were offered in past apps. Hopefully this is be enhanced with updates.

Entering new entries is very easy. Just tap the Add button (plus symbol). I suggest selecting the Type button on the top right first so that your custom field icon and names display. You can still customize individual entries by changing the icon and names and masking option per field if you like. I’ve noticed that the Type field list is not completely alphabetical. If you created new Types in the past, those appear to be filtered to the bottom. Also, all of the previous customizations you made for the field names associated with each Type did not completely stay intact. I found one Type that did not have the correct field names, but all others appear to be okay.

I discovered that the first version of the beta did not import the Notes field. That was a major fix that was addressed with the current upgrade that is now available. Unfortunately the line breaks were not recognized so all of the data in the notes field runs together. I’m thinking that this is a Palm issue because the Memos app does the same thing. But again, at least I have the data now.

Lastly, syncing with the desktop software is a must-have upgrade. I don’t think this requires any pontification. Who really enters mass data via the Palm Pre keyboard? Also, currently there is no way to back up your data. To get your data into your Palm Pre, you have to create a CSV or VID export of your data from the desktop version. Upload the file to your Pre by connecting it to your computer in USB Drive mode. Open SplashID on your Pre and do an Import. It is suggested that you then delete the file off your Pre. It doesn’t say whether something bad will happen if you don’t or if they are just suggesting that you save the file space since the data is now in your app. Because there is no back up, I suggest that you do not add information to the SplashID app via the Pre because there is no export function. Also, if you update your desktop version, you must create a new export file, Delete All Records off the Pre and then upload the new file.

All in all, SplashData, Inc. is on the right track. We must remember that this is a beta version; having all of the data in my Pre is the most important issue. If the items mentioned here are the worst of it, then I’m okay with it…as long as these are addressed before it becomes a paid app.
