[edit] Review

Pandora was one of Palm’s launch partners, meaning that they had early access to the SDK and was showing off previews of its application as early as January, months before the Pre launched. They have managed to create a wonderful application, and a perfect example of the benefits of Web OS’s multitasking environment.

Upon initial launch of the application, it asks if you are new to Pandora, or already have an account. For newcomers, registering is required, but free. If you already have an account, simply enter your email and password, and you can get started.

Pandora will list all radio stations tied to your account. You may pick a station to listen to, or click the plus button in the bottom left corner to create a new station based on song, artist, or composer. Once the station starts playing, you are presented the cover art and information about the current song playing. Click the ‘i’ icon on the top right to get further details about the artist and song. Finally, you are also provided the typical Pandora controls to vote up/down, pause, or skip a track. You may also click on the arrow to the following advanced options: bookmark artist, bookmark song, buy this song, buy this album, and don’t play song for one month.

This is a very clean and functional interface, but nothing too draw-dropping or unique. Where I think the real beauty in the application lies, is when its not front and center. When this application is running in the background, it provides a tray icon that when clicked, allows you to vote up/down or pause the music without interupting what you are doing. When a new song begins, the tray expands to show you the new song information. This works very similar to how a popup notification would work while listening to music on a desktop, and that desktop-like experience is what I love so much.

The only bad thing I could think of with this application is when running in the background there is no way to skip a track. I would have preferred to have that option available as well, but I understand why they didn’t, as space is limited.

This app is a hit, so stop reading and start downloading!
